The Passing of Capt Samuel Owonaru – By Patrick Tamara

The passing of Capt. Owonaru is a timely reminder of the sacrifice, courage and vision demonstrated by a generation of Ijaw Youths. His generation, led by the late Major Isaac Adaka Boro, took decisive actions that were beyond their age and times and have rightly outlived them in a literal sense now, following the event of yesterday.

Over the last 24 hours, various personalities and groups in Ijaw Nation have expressed their condolences over the sad passing of Captain Samuel Owonaru yesterday.

Whilst we reflect on the significance of his person and role in the history of the perennial struggle of the Niger Delta people, our hearts go out to his immediate and extended family who are most affected by the loss.

We recognise that he was firstly a father, a brother, an uncle, a nephew and a member of a family, who dedicated himself to a just cause, before anything else.

We hope that the Owonaru family and the entire people of Kaiama and KOLGA find the fortitude to bear this massive loss.

The vision and actions were not about a man, a local government or even a state. It was always about a people defined only by the homogeneity of their tribe and their unique experience of injustice and imposed underdevelopment; an experience that is sadly still as relevant today as it was all those decades ago.

As we all mourn, reflect and prepare to give Capt. Owonaru a final goodbye befitting of his place in the history of Ijaw Nation, may we all take up the challenge of defining the next phase of the struggle for justice and development in the Niger Delta region based on values and principles that would make our forbearers such as Capt. Owonaru proud.

May God Bless His Soul
